I'd try it and see.. I'm not intimately familiar with this modem that was introduced in 2002'ish.

Its rather old,.. so it may not break the 7Mbs Barrier. I know it was DOCSIS 1.0 Certified, and was capable of 'future' 1.1 implementation.

On cases such as this.. These are usually limited by current firmware and the Ethernet ports T-Base. If it is a 10-Base-T then the overhead alone will prevent it from reaching 10Mbps..

Questionable on 8 -- It might move from 5-7Mbps.. And possible reach the 8, even with a 10 -- But usually the overhead limits it to 7 something (sometimes lower).

So again, unless someone knows for sure, just try it. If not, swap it at the cable company's office.. Or buy a new modem.

I'd recommend a Motorola SB5120 (The 5100 series is great).

    Take care,

Is that true about Motorola SURFboard SB5120 is very bad for gamers? Some people talking about lot of packet loss with this modem.

That is a total myth. The Moto SB5120 is one of the most reliable consumer modems available.

People experiencing packet loss are 'generally' referring to (or just don't know), problems in their cable system.. OR their own wiring.

As with any electronic device some have inherent flaws from the factory and need to be fixed, but by and large this is about like getting struck by lightning on the odds.

European cable systems are designed a bit different, but of course, that modem will work in Europe.

But its NOT the only 'good' modem.

I would call your Cable company on the phone,.. and ask them for a list (or just 4-5) of their top approved modems for the 8Mbps service.

Give us that list,.. or the few they can tell you off the top of their head, and we'll report back with the one you should go with.

The best option is always to go with your local MSO's approved listing.. They are more likely to update the firmware and such on modems they 'use' themselves on installs, etc.

get an terayon tj715x they are 2.0 and my works good

using an SB5100 will cause your data light to flash all the time and waste 5kbit/s

I'm fairly sure the SB5100 series.. ie: 5120 will do you just fine. But any DOCSIS 2.0 compatible modem is what your aiming for , for the guaranteed speeds. (They have built in 100Mbps ports, and so on).

A 5100 Series modem does not 'waste' any more bandwidth than another. The 'flashing' lights are generally indicative of ARP traffic on the internal private range of your ISP.

If you are ever curious about what connections are open, just utilize Netstat -a and do a little probing.

Anonymous, that was quite an unusual remark. Mind explaining the science behind a Motorola 5100 Series wasting 5k 'more' bandwidth than your proposed Terayon?

Not argumentative, just curious if you have some factual basis behind this that I've never heard of.
