    Talking W.O.W or Comcast

Hi, I live in Sterling Heights, Michigan and I'm getting tired or AT&T's slow speeds so I'm looking to move toward cable. And I've decided between Comcast and W.O.W. I'm looking to get their triple-play packages. Phone, HSI, and Digital Cable.

Now which company has the best service?

    - The best Phone service. (Such as the ease of setting it up and sound quality)

    - The best HSI (both would be 6 Mbps if I get them, I'm looking for who will actually meet the speed.)

    - The best Digital Cable (such as more channels, more HD channels, cheaper HD service, and more VOD stuff.)

It is all relative -- Strictly speaking of service.

The CATV offerings, and Telephony are going to be on par with each other,.. The major differences will be in HSI (Internet) Speeds.

WOW offers a maximum of 6Mbps/1Mbps (In select areas)

Comcast offers a Maximum of 8Mbps/768Kbps -- With the "Powerboost" option that knocks it up to 12Mbps a times.

The Powerboost for Michigan is located in the following:

    »PowerBoost Up In Michigan

So, your gonna get faster Internet speeds 'likely' with Comcast.

    (Comcast is a bigger company)

quote:- The best Phone service. (Such as the ease of setting it up and sound quality)

These will be very similar... VOIP is VOIP -- If the network is clean, so will the calls. I imagine the services will provision a seperate VOIP modem for the phone service,. and the QOS for that modems data will have priority on the network. (Vs, something like Vonage, which uses your residential HSI connection, and can have problems..)

quote:- The best HSI (both would be 6 Mbps if I get them, I'm looking for who will actually meet the speed.)

Ok so you've checked already -- Well,.. that would just depend on who has the best/cleanest plant. I'd go around and ask neighbors. See what results you find.. ask them about their connection, if it slows during primetime,.. and how fast it is.. etc. If Comcast is faster, but slows during primetime,.. But WOW is a little slower, but is steady -- I'd probably go with WOW.. (And vice versa). I'd definitely go with the general consensus in your local area of which service is MORE reliable on uptime with HSI.

I use Charter, and I couldn't tell someone in California if Charter is a good choice for them.. because the name only means so much -- The local Headend, and the employee's and equipment they have is really what counts.

quote:- The best Digital Cable (such as more channels, more HD channels, cheaper HD service, and more VOD stuff.)

I'm gonna have to lean towards Comcast for the best lineup here. Price, well they both have the triple play -- (All the major MSO's have the 99$ promo's going).

But the bigger the company, the more contracts (in general) they are going to have with the major, and not so major networks. Equalling larger channel lineups.. more HDTV selection and so on.

This isn't true EVERYWHERE,.. WoW in you zipcode might have more HD channels than Comcast in your Zipcode,.. But in 'general' it works that way.

All of these questions.. aside from reliability can be answered MUCH better by calling both WoW and Comcast, and asking them for your area,.. What is available. Then compare.

Again, for reliability ask as many neighbors.. and those in your zipcode as you can. (Or just get one service, if it sucks, switch to the other.. )

WoW either uses Comcasts equipment (piggybacking).. Or you have two systems run in your area.. Either way,.. switching is a very easy process (technically).

Wow, thanks. Now, for the VOIP telephone service, what type of cables would need to be connected to the VOIP modem (if needed?) Phone Cord, Coaxial Cable, Ethernet Cable?

Sort of depends on how the company does it. If they use a separate modem for the telephony (which is good) -- Then Coaxial to the modem,.. and potentially Ethernet to your phone system. (Depends on how your home is wired).

Though I wouldn't worry about it,.. the installer will hook it all up for you. And if you do it yourself, they will give the cables, and it very obvious where they go.

I'd recommend an installer though, as its best to put this at the Demarc, Network Interface for the phone system. (Not that it's particularly hard,.. but why not let them install it , if its 'free')

The cable modem, sure, no problem installing yourself, the Telephone can be a little more tricky, but not much.
