What is the preferred method?

I have a DirecTV HDMI OUT that I want to go to my TV, and also my stereo.

Basically I want to be able to watch TV with the choice of stereo sound or TV sound...

Currently everything is pointed at the receiver, with the receiver OUT going to the HDTV....

The HDMI Pass-Through works great....but it works only with the unit 'off' or in standby mode.

I'd like the option of not using the receiver for TV sound when the receiver is on (so that I may listen to a CD, or via Bluetooth/laptop/NAS, etc)...

So....I see two potential solutions (and forgive me - I'm a newbie here!)...

1) Hook up a Y-HDMI split out of the DirecTV box. Send one to TV, and one to receiver. Use remote control / TV input to dictate where your sound comes from. Question - do those splitters allow ALL the HDMI signal through (audio)?? Would this be best done with a splitter (Y-cable?) or better with a switch?

2) The other way I could see would be to send the DirecTV signal directly to TV, and then the HDMI out of the TV goes to an HDMI IN on the receiver.

I'm not sure how that one would work, or if either situation produces any limitations, degradation, etc.

Thanks for reading - it is much appreciated.

Oh yeah - Yamaha RX-V465 (AVR), Polk Audio RM6750 speakers (recent purchase) and a Philips 42" HDTV (1080p) that is a couple years of age...
